“Any act, if in
accordance with the will, is an act of magic.”
(Aleister Crowley, Magick in Theory and Practice)
Magick is an ongoing series of photographic
assemblages, a kind of visual record of my research in the areas of magic/ the
paranormal/ the occult, my experiments with divination (bibliomancy/ rhapsodomancy)
and my study of poetry, sacred geometry and holy texts.
Several
distinguished researchers (scientists, philosophers, religious scholars etc.)
believe that reality is more complex than what is ordinarily perceived by the
senses or revealed by mainstream science –they suggest we may all possess
psychic faculties, albeit usually in undeveloped form. Of particular importance
for this project were the theories of English poet-occultist Aleister Crowley
who proposed that changes can occur in conformity with the human will. He argued
that by employing various techniques such as magical and sexual rituals, yoga,
meditation, divination (astrology, tarot) etc. people can discover their "true will" and attain higher levels of
consciousness.
One could perhaps
say that the images contained in this photographic journal are physical equivalents-manifestations
of my mental-spiritual investigations. Rigorous study and artistic experimentation
have helped me realize that the reaches of imagination and the unconscious mind
are perfectly real, as real as the physical world.
